RCB 187/9 in 20 Overs
An important victory against Delhi was key for RCB in making the playoffs, particularly after they lost De Kock and Duminy through injury before starting this tournament, but have made good use of young batsmen like Rajat Patidar who hit an unbeaten 41-ball hundred against Gujarat Titans.
After losing both Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli early on in the Powerplay, Royal Challengers Bangalore rebounded well with an aggressive partnership from Rajat Patidar and Will Jacks that produced 88 runs in just nine overs, setting the scene for an explosive finish at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
DC’s bowlers produced an excellent death-overs performance to restrict the home side to 187/9. Swapnil Singh opened his attack and struck immediately, trapping David Warner at long on for Abishek Porel to claim his wicket in his first over. Mukesh Kumar followed suit shortly thereafter by bowling Jake Fraser-McGurk after he edged one to Faf du Plessis at backward point and ending his innings there.
But RCB’s batsmen refused to let DC’s hopes fade as their batsmen kept hitting big sixes with abandon, with Axar Patel hitting two off Khaleel Ahmed before Cameron Green, while Mahipal Lomror hit three sixes off Kuldeep Yadav’s over for three sixes off Kuldeep Yadav in one over! However, DC fielded brilliantly while their middle order couldn’t take full advantage of it and eventually posted an underwhelming total.
DC 128/8 in 15.4 Overs
Bengaluru-based franchise, Bengaluru Capitals, made it to the playoffs of two of the previous editions but failed to advance past that stage in the 16th edition of IPL and have experienced a decline since. Last season they only managed five victories and finished eighth; but so far this year things look promising for them as they’ve already won five out of eight matches and sit second place in standings.
Even though they got off to a slow start, DC were able to establish themselves in a commanding position by the end of the powerplay. Jake Fraser-McGurk started off strong while David Warner provided experienced support with a swift innings. Rohit Sharma and Will Jacks played pivotal roles for DC as they posted an impressive total score.
Yash Dayal strikes early with his first delivery as Abhishek Porel falls victim to it. Porel attempted to play it towards leg-slip but failed in timing it properly and instead found an offside fielder at midwicket who took an easy catch.
Yash Dayal catches Kuldeep Yadav to seal the win
Yash Dayal continued his outstanding performance for Delhi Capitals by snaring Kuldeep Yadav off Yadav’s bat to seal victory for their side. Dayal came running from deep in order to swat it away and give Delhi Capitals victory in an exciting matchup against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
After early wickets fell for Delhi Cricket Association (DC), Axar Patel and Rasikh Salam combined well to rebuild their innings with 56 runs scored between them in the middle overs to give DC hope before eventually succumbing to pressure and being run out for 275 in 16 overs. Axar Patel was eventually caught at slip by Yash Dayal before eventually DC were all out.
Mukesh Kumar became the next victim as he top-edged a pull shot from Lockie Ferguson and was caught by Mahipal Lomror at short midwicket with an easy backtrack and pouched catch.
Jack-Fraser McGurk began DC’s run chase with two fours and sixes as they got off to a strong start, only for Mohammed Siraj to bowl him immediately with an uppilter delivery that put even more pressure on them to keep up the run chase. Soon thereafter Axar Patel was dismissed, thus concluding their innings and ending it when Yash Dayal castled Kuldeep off.
Rajat Patidar hits Axar Patel into the stands for a SIX
After an inauspicious start, Axar Patidar began making progress after struggling early. He struck Anderson over deep point for four before rocking back and lofting him down the leg side for six. Unfortunately for DC, however, Dayal top-edged one backward point where Faf du Plessis caught it to put an end to their hopes of reaching the quarter finals.
He attempted to hit another but misjudged it and hit a fielder at midwicket instead, giving Shai Hope an unlikely catch chance.
Jaiswal and Patidar kept adding runs at the other end, until Rehan overpitched his delivery and it was punished by Jaiswal who hit Rehan square on off side for two runs before pushing behind into third man to make an easy catch.
But the DC batsmen weren’t done yet as Axar and Hope combined to build an outstanding fifty-run partnership, led by Patidar who hit Lockie Ferguson over long-on for a SIX as stand-in skipper Rishabh Pant was unavailable. Axar pulled for two more runs before hitting Kuldeep Yadav over long-on for yet another maximum and was given a guard of honour from DC camp as he returned back to pavillion.
Shai Hope gets a lucky edge
Windies appear poised for victory as Hope takes advantage of Moeen Ali short ball to hit it over the slips for four. Shimron Hetmyer then followed up with an exquisite double at third man off Moeen Ali short balls, just grazing the inside edge past wicketkeeper Kemar Roach for another four. Now on 104 runs himself and the Windies need 107 to win.
Hetmyer attempts to gain some footing back into the game with some sixes and fours but only finds the boundary off of the first ball of the ninth over. After that he blocks two balls before taking one single to reach 95 runs.
RCB won the toss and elected to bat. Although they lost early wickets, Axar Patel kept them alive thanks to an excellent 25-ball 54. However, soon thereafter their middle order crumbled quickly and they fell just short of an attainable total.
Delhi had finished seventh in 2015 but were far superior this time around, finishing as run chasers in their league and coming very close to winning it all this season. Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer excelled with bat; Kagiso Rabada claimed 52 wickets; while Axar Patel and Marcus Stoinis proved excellent fielders as well. Their revamped Delhi side even came very close to winning its first title this time round!
Yash Dayal cleans up Kuldeep Yadav
Yash Dayal struck to seal the game for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). His ball was slow, on length, around off and got away from Kuldeep Yadav as he tried to go after it; instead it spun back in and raced past gully region to send Yadav packing.
Rasikh Dar Salam falls to a stunning bowl by Yash Dayal who uses his slower delivery on length outside off and pushes it towards long-on for an easy catch.
Jake Fraser-McGurk returns to the middle, joined by Axar Patel who attempts to avoid being run-out but Cameron Green takes him off his back foot, leading Axar into getting hit for a single by Cameron as they both attempt to avoid runouts; unfortunately it was not meant to be.
Defending champions are playing their final match of the season and hoping to end it on a positive note. With players like Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw and Marcus Stoinis at bat and Kagiso Rabada and Axar Patel behind the stumps – but it remains uncertain whether they can win this time around as none of their home games were won during tournament play and their road performances have not been impressive either – so it is crucial that they win this match to secure top four position within league.
